What is Phakic ICL?
Phakic ICL, also known as intraocular lens implantation, is an option for people with high myopia, high astigmatism, or thin corneas that are not suitable for laser. The Phakic procedure does not remove any corneal tissue; instead, it places an additional lens, custom-made to the measurements of each eye, behind the iris. Because of this, the results depend heavily on the skill of the person performing the surgery: from choosing the lens size and calculating the power, to the lens placement technique and post-operative follow-up.
Who is Phakic ICL suitable for, and what should you keep in mind?
Phakic ICL is generally considered for people aged roughly 21 to 60 whose refractive error has stabilized and who have no other eye diseases. This method can correct myopia up to about 18 diopters and astigmatism up to about 6 diopters. When the cornea is too thin for laser, ICL is often the option doctors recommend.
Like any intraocular surgery, ICL still carries rare risks. That is why the pre-operative screening, including measuring corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, eye dimensions, and endothelial cells, is just as important as the surgery itself.

BS.CKII Bùi Tiến Hùng also notes that results may vary depending on each person’s constitution. When receiving Award 5000, the doctor talked about his journey of more than 10 years pursuing this technique and about how his first Phakic ICL patient has now been followed for 13 years.

Current workplace: Medical Director of the Vietnam – Russia International Eye Hospital.
ThS.BS.CKII Bùi Thị Thu Hương works in the ophthalmology specialty and is highly experienced in refractive surgery and intraocular lens implantation. In July 2026, the doctor appeared on the program “Your Doctor” broadcast on HTV7 to give advice on Phakic EVO ICL, focusing on how it corrects myopia and astigmatism, the examination process, indications, and the differences between Phakic ICL and corneal laser surgery. 5. ThS.BS.CKI Nguyễn Phú Tùng

ThS.BS.CKI Nguyễn Phú Tùng – Phakic ICL Expert
Current workplace: Director of Saigon Eye Hospital – Ngô Gia Tự (Ho Chi Minh City) since 2013, and also serving as medical director.
Qualifications: Graduated as a general physician from Tay Nguyen University (1993), earned a Specialist Level I degree in ophthalmology (1997) and a Master of Ophthalmology (2002) at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City. In the interview marking this milestone, the doctor emphasized that Phakic ICL EVO preserves the structure of the cornea, does not thin the cornea or cause dry eye, and that the lens can be removed relatively easily if it turns out to be unsuitable. The philosophy he follows is to put treatment quality and patient safety first.
6. BS.CKII Phan Hồng Mai

BS.CKII Phan Hồng Mai – Phakic ICL Expert
Current workplace: Head of the Refractive Department, Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, a tertiary-level specialist eye hospital and one of the major refractive surgery centers in Vietnam. Her BS.CKII qualification and this position are recorded in news articles and in professional conference materials.
According to information published by the Refractive Department, BS.CKII Phan Hồng Mai has nearly 30 years in ophthalmology, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment and management of refractive errors in both children and adults. The department she leads offers surface laser, Femto-LASIK, SMILE, and the group of Phakic ICL/IPCL intraocular lens implantation procedures.
Expertise and teaching: Her standout strengths are school-age myopia and controlling progressive myopia in children using Ortho-K, specialized spectacle frames, and blue-light filtering lenses. The doctor has served as a presenter in a continuing medical education program on the treatment of refractive errors, including PRK, LASIK, SMILE-type corneal tissue extraction, Phakic IOL and Phaco IOL, and also takes part in clinical instruction at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City.
In her consultation content on Phakic ICL, the doctor explains the principle, suitable candidates, the lens implantation process, and the points to keep in mind before deciding on surgery. Her consistent view is to treat Phakic ICL as one option within the refractive surgery system, not a default alternative to laser, and she emphasizes thorough pre-operative examination, lens customization, and long-term follow-up.
Reference cost table
| Featured expert | Hospital / Center | Reference cost (both eyes) |
| TS.BS Vũ Anh Tuấn | Japan International Eye Hospital (Hanoi) | 90 – 130 million VND |
| BS.CKII Bùi Tiến Hùng | Ánh Sáng Eye Hospital (Hanoi) / Việt An (Da Nang) | ~ 85 – 110 million VND |
| ThS.BS Nguyễn Phú Tùng | Saigon Eye Hospital – Ngô Gia Tự (Ho Chi Minh City) | From 90 million VND |
| PGS.TS.BS Trần Hải Yến | Hai Yen Eye Care (Ho Chi Minh City) | ~ 90 million VND |
| ThS.BS.CKII Bùi Thị Thu Hương | Vietnam – Russia International Eye Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) | ~ 98 million VND |
| BS.CKII Phan Hồng Mai | Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital | ~ 70 million VND |
According to 2026 estimates, the general price range for Phakic ICL in Vietnam is roughly 70 to 110 million VND for both eyes. The EVO ICL type for simple myopia usually costs 70 to 90 million, while the Toric type, which corrects astigmatism at the same time, costs more, at around 100 to 110 million VND.
Why does Phakic cost more than other methods? Each lens is manufactured to the individual measurements of each eye and imported from abroad, which usually means waiting several weeks for the order. The price also depends on the lens type, the in-depth measurement systems, the post-operative follow-up package, and the reputation of the facility.
Conclusion
All five doctors have solid professional backgrounds and are associated with major ophthalmology facilities, but the amount of public information specifically about Phakic ICL varies: some have been honored by the lens manufacturer based on case numbers, while others stand out in broader fields. Treat this article as a starting point, then book a screening exam to find out whether your eyes are suitable for ICL.
The information in this article is compiled from public sources as of October 2026, is for reference only, and does not replace a doctor’s advice. Costs and workplaces may change.
